About
Bilharzia Storytelling Initiative is a community-focused organization dedicated to raising awareness and preventing Bilharzia, also known as schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease caused by parasitic worms of the genus Schistosoma. The disease spreads through contact with contaminated freshwater and mainly affects children and vulnerable communities. Our initiative uses storytelling, drawings, games, and interactive activities to make health education engaging and easy to understand for young learners. We work primarily in primary schools across Bugesera, Ruhango, and Gatsibo districts in Rwanda, where we share specially designed Notebooks with strong covers and clear illustrations that teach children safe hygiene practices and disease prevention. In addition, we organize training sessions for teachers, parents, and community health workers to strengthen community awareness and encourage healthy behaviors at home and in villages. Through creativity, education, and community involvement, Bilharzia Storytelling Initiative aims to reduce the spread of schistosomiasis and build healthier, more informed communities.
